Active After-school Communities program

Program summary

The Active After-schol Communities program is a structured physical activity program delivered nationally to children enrolled in Australian primary schools and Childcare Benefit (CCB approved Out of School Hours Care Services (OHSCS) during the timeslot of 3.0pm to 5.30pm. The program is designed to engage traditionally non-active children in structured physical activities and build pathways between local community organisations and sporting clubs.

The program will provide increased opportunities for children to be physically active, improve motor skill development and provide opportunities for participation in quality, safe and supervised activities during latchkey hours. The overall aims and objectives of the program are:

  • to enhance the physical activity of Australian primary school aged children through a nationally coordinated program
  • to provide increased opportunities for inclusive participation in quality, safe and fun structured physical activities
  • to stimulate local community involvement in structured phsycial activity and sport
  • to provide the opportunity for up to 3,250 Australian primary schools and/or CCB approved OSHCS to participate within the AASC program.

Who can apply?

Australian Primary schools and Child benefit (CCB) approved Out of School Hours Care Services (OSHCS) can express their interest in participating in the program by completing the form on the website (see below).

What will be funded?

Support available to AASC program schools and OSHCS includes:

  • the ability to apply for funding to cover costs incurred in the delivery of the program, including remuneration of costs for the provision of supervising teachers, payment for the delivery of the program and purchasing of equipment;

  • a designated AASC regional coordinator to assist in linking primary schools or OSHCS to potential program delivers;

  • a quality assurance framework to ensure that the AASC provides fun, safe and quality experiences for children and is delivered by suitably qualitifed and accredited personnel;

  • professional development opportuniteis for volunteers, teachers, OSHCS staff and community members to deliver structured physical activity.

Current priorities

Emphasis of the AASC program:

  • Focuses on the development of mobility skills and motor skill development
  • Uses a Playing for Life approach to delivery
  • Is school/OSHCS focused and directed
  • Emphasises the development of community networks and partnerships to create sustainable programs and pathways that will encourge life-long participation in structured physical activity.
