Program summary
www.leadershipforwomen.com.au is inviting women who have developed self-initiated projects for the community to nominate themselves for the 2009 national Leadership Achievement Award for Women.  

Judges on the Panel for the 2009 Awards are:

  • Karen Buczynski Lee, Filmaker and Writer;
  • Dr Lynette Dumble, Founder and Director of Global Sisterhood Network, Scientist;
  • Dr Sarah Maddison, Senior Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of New South Wales, writer, media commentator for Women's Electoral Lobby (WEL) and a former Policy Officer for the NSW Department for Women;
  • Christine Nixon, Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police;
  • Cheryl O'Connor, CEO, Australian College of Educators;
  • Dr Shirley Randell AM, Senior Adviser, Responsive and Accountable Local Government - RALG/Gender, SNV, East and Southern Africa Region - Rwanda;
  • Moira Rayner, Principal Moira Rayner & Associates, formerly Commissioner for Equal Opportunity (Victoria) and Hearings Commissioner Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (federal), Director of the Office of the Children's Rights Commissioner for London; Chair of the National Children's and Youth Law Centre, and a Director of the National Federation of Australian Women and the Law Institute of Victoria, writer and lawyer;
  • Geraldine Robertson, Founder and Director of Women's Web - Women's Stories, Women's Actions;
  • Diann Rodgers-Healey, Founder, CLW;
  • Dr Jocelynne Scutt, Barrister & Human Rights Lawyer Former Anti-Discrimination Commissioner of Tasmania, Writer & Executive Producer.
Key dates
Applications close 22 December 2008

Applications can be found at: www.leadershipforwomen.com.au and close on 22 December 2008 with winners being announced on 8 March 2009 International Women's Day.

Who can apply?
All Australian women 18 years and above who have developed self-initiated projects for the community.
What will be funded?

The winner will receive prize money of $1200; two Finalists $800 each and eight short-listed candidates will receive $500 in prize money.

Winners of the 2008 Award are Sarah Elston and Caitlin Grigsby, the founders of the Blue Stockings Association to fund and encourage the education of women from diverse backgrounds, particularly students from Monash Gippsland and Latrobe Valley schools.

Juliet Bourke was chosen as the Finalist for the Award for being the driving force behind the Taskforce on Care Costs (TOCC) since its inception in 2003. 

Short-listed applicants were:

  • Helen Anne Clarke for initiating support for women in drought affected areas of NSW through the "Hand to the Land" and "Renewal for Rural Women" Programmes;
  • Paula Curotte in founding the "Souffle Sisters", a choir for women, singing uplifting music for the community;
  • Danielle Ecuyer for founding the Women for Change Alliance to create awareness about climate change and sustainability;
  • Rhonda Obad for founding the Bridge Back to Life Foundation to help children and youth who are at risk and
  • Margaret Mary Gurry was awarded the Highly Commended Award for founding and co-ordinating for eleven years the Friday Night School for students of non-English speaking backgrounds.
How much funding is available?
The winner will receive $1200; two Finalists $800 each and eight short-listed candidates will receive $500
